My Headcanon Future: Rarity and Spike

Description

Spike the dragon never had his eyes set on anyone except Rarity. She was beautiful, elegant, creative, generous, intelligent, kind; she was perfect, at least to him. Rarity never seemed to have much interest in him however, often she just used his assistance and dismissed his feelings as just a little colt crush. Even if she did feel romantically about him, he was a baby dragon, while she was nearly an adult pony. However, they both missed the key factor. He was a dragon. Not much is known about dragons by ponies. So although it was surprising, it turned out it was normal when one day Spike suddenly grew to about the size of a pony. Afterall, ponies have no idea about dragon's growth patterns and such. He finally was old enough to grow out of his baby stage and become an adolescent. After this event had happened, both Rarity and Spike considered their feelings. I mean now he no longer looked like a little baby, he was actually as large as Rarity; and although he had been considered a baby from his stage in a dragon's life cycle, he was actually 14 years old in pony years; a teenager. Rarity was 20 at the time, so yes she was 6 years older than him, but that's not as far apart as she originally thought. Rarity started to see him more as a good friend than a little helper. They started to actually hang out like friends, getting to know each other better. Rarity thought perhaps he would grow out of his crush and they'd remain friends, but Spike just fell more in love with her each day. Finally, he built up the courage and asked her out. At first Rarity tried to think of how to reject him casually and politely, before she realized; he had been here for her all this time, and had she just been leading him on? He was such a good friend and, the more she thought about it, everything she wanted in a stallion. Nowadays he was actually quite mature-looking and handsome, having gone through another growth spurt; putting him at the young adult stage of a dragon. After a few moments of thought, she finally decided yes. She would give him a chance.

After exactly 4 years of dating, Spike proposed (it was on their 4th year anniversary). He probably would've asked sooner but he had still been young. Their wedding was set up in merely a matter of a few months; since Rarity had already planned out her dream wedding. It was elegant and classy, but with some fun dancing and such at the end of the night. With new ponies flooding into Ponyville raving about Princess Twilight when she was crowned a few year ago; many of the Mane Six became a bit famous, and as a result Rarity's Boutique became very popular. So now married, with all the extra money they built the upstairs/living part of the boutique bigger, with more rooms and space for their future children. Future children... How the hay were they supposed to have kids anyways?

2 years of marriage later and they finally decided they wanted kids. That was a problem though, they were two different species so how were they going to have kids? They at first thought of adopting, but they wanted kids of their own blood. Who better to come to with this problem then their sister/-in-law, the Princess of Magic herself. Twilight could probably help them out. The couple came to her and asked her if she knew any magic that could help. Luckily Twilight had recently studied Life Magic, and quickly thought up a spell that might work. She stuck a needle in each of them and took a sample of their blood, which is filled with DNA. With a bit of DNA and the help of a magic spell Twilight created, a dragon egg. Rarity's face lost all color and she nearly fainted. Twilight apologized sheepishly for failing, but Spike beamed and asked her whatever she was apologizing for. He was overjoyed. Spike reminded them that although Twilight had created a dragon baby for them, it was their own blood so it was their child now. Rarity knew not to make assumptions about their new egg and realized he was right. Rarity decided she would accept it as her child, although she made Spike and Twilight vow to never speak of this and keep the egg a secret. Thanking Twilight for her help, they took the egg home and awaited it's hatching.

When the time finally came a long 5 months later, the egg started to hatch. Spike was beaming brighter than the sun while Rarity remained unsure about this. The hatchling clawed it's way out and was actually... A unicorn. Their new baby was a white unicorn filly with green eyes and dark purple hair; nearly a reflection of her mother. Both of them were absolutely shocked, Spike being a little disappointed now and Rarity being the excited one. She picked up her new filly and cradled her in her arms, only to have the newborn suddenly breathe fire. Today was just full of surprises. When they took their filly to Twilight to figure out what she was exactly, they learned that she was both a dragon and a pony. She was either, or neither. She had strong magical powers that allowed her to change between a pony and a dragon at will, and so they couldn't know for sure what she was originally. Twilight gave an encouraging stroke on the baby's horn, and she changed into a little dragon. Spike and Rarity glanced uneasily at each other as Twilight handed them their baby. As they stared down at their newborn, their eyes softened and their hearts melted. It didn't matter what she was, she was their baby. They named her Mirage because she was never what she seemed to be.

Raising Mirage was very challenging for the couple, especially since she was their first child. At first Rarity still struggled with her dragon form, and had her become a pony when she took her out places. Spike however, loved her dragon side, teaching her how to breathe fire and such. When the time came for her to start school came they argued over whether she should hide her dragon form or just be herself and change at will. It was a difficult decision since they were both her true forms, and she seemed to favor being a pony anyways. They ended up deciding to let her be herself. Despite that decision, rarely anypony knew about her dragon form since she always stayed as a pony at school. She didn't want to scare her friends or for others to think she was weird. Only her closest friends, Primary Streak and Midnight Shine knew about it. When Mirage went through puberty it was harder for her to stay in her pony form, since her dragon form was starting to grow larger than her as a pony; so she struggled with making herself smaller as a pony. Her dragon instincts started to kick in as well, becoming protective of her family and friends, and started hoarding her mother's thread at one point. Spike had to give her the 'dragon talk' about being greedy. Despite every challenge they ended up overcoming them and Mirage grew up nicely.
Mirage grew up a fierce, independent, witty, and beautiful young filly. She was a lot like her mother; although she had an edgier style and wasn't as proper and lady-like. She liked food (especially sweets), making jokes, and pulling pranks with her magic or dragon form. When she was young she was quite shy and self-conscious, but as she got older and made friends she became more outgoing and accepting of her dragon form. She got her cutie mark as a young filly when her Aunt Twilight helped her gain control of her transforming magic.

4 years after Mirage's hatching, Spike suggested having another child so Mirage wouldn't be so lonely. Reflecting on how difficult it was raising Mirage and how difficult it was for Mirage growing up, they agreed they couldn't have another child unnaturally made. They couldn't have normal kids, and they accepted that, but they couldn't shake the feeling that Mirage needed someone. After a while of consideration, they recalled their original idea of adopting. As Rarity was the Element of Generosity, the idea of giving a child a nice home always sounded pleasing to her. They found a beautiful baby at the orphanage whose parents had both died, leaving her alone in the world. They felt a connection with that baby and adopted her, naming her Lavender Jewel. Jewel grew up to be a sweet, kind, and caring mare who never judged based on appearances. She was very reserved and naturally graceful/well mannered. Jewel and Mirage were very close as foals, Jewel helping her overcome her shyness, but as Jewel got older she became mommy's favorite. This caused Mirage to feel jealous of her adopted sister; because she was normal and so 'perfect'. They had a big fight, but in the end worked it out. They still love each other and have each other's backs but aren't as close as they used to be.
Jewel got her cutie mark when she discovered a clue to her past: a strange instinct for gems. Even though an earth pony with no magic she would get this tingling sensation in her hooves whenever she passed her mother's gem stash. She dismissed the feeling until it kept nagging her whilst gem hunting with the family. She finally gave into her gut feeling to dig in a certain spot, and sure enough, they uncovered the largest cluster of gems of the day. Her cutie mark represents this strange instinct and her hidden gem type of personality. She occasionally feels a strange urge to head north, almost as if something up north is calling to her.

Nowadays the family is quite popular; Rarity is a big time designer in Ponyville, Spike is still Princess Twilight's loyal assistant, Lavender is a popular model in Canterlot, and Mirage studies magic with her Auntie Twilight, making her a bit popular. They're all quite busy but they always make time for each other and for friends.
